The vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease continues throughout the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou. Up to yesterday [23 Jan 2024], almost 80% of the wilaya's cattle had been vaccinated, thanks to the mobilization of local authorities and the services concerned, notably the agricultural and veterinary services. In parallel with the vaccination, which will be reinforced by a second campaign starting today [24 Jan 2024], urgent measures have been taken to contain this devastating disease if it is not effectively managed.

In fact, the campaign, which is now drawing to a close, involved some 48 462 head of cattle belonging to some 4516 breeders in all the communes of the Tizi-Ouzou wilaya. Veterinary services have already received 50 000 doses of vaccine against this disease affecting cattle, while another quota of no less than 14 000 doses has just been received and will be distributed in the coming hours.

To ensure that the vaccination campaign is as effective as possible, no fewer than 71 veterinarians have been mobilized in the field. In fact, the agricultural services have mobilized only 25 public vets alongside the private sector, as the rest have been mobilized for a delicate mission, namely increased surveillance of slaughterhouses.

This surveillance is part of a wide range of preventive measures taken in response to the outbreak of the disease in livestock. Other decisions included the closure of weekly sheep and cattle markets, and severe restrictions and monitoring of livestock movements on the roads. This operation was carried out in close collaboration with the security services, who were fully mobilized to ensure its success.

With regard to the emergence of the disease in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou, it should be noted that the first case was reported in a farmer from the commune of Larbaâ Naït Irathen and Tizi Rached, who brought a bovine into the Tala Athmane abattoir. This case was discovered thanks to the vigilance of veterinarians, who diagnosed the disease in its early stages. According to a traceability check carried out by the relevant departments with the farmer in question, the disease had been imported from a market in another wilaya of the country. At present, there are 8 outbreaks, notably in Tizi Rached, Taboukert, Bouloughou, Mekla, Chaäyev, Aït Lâaziz and Bouzeguène.

["Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of mammals and has a great potential for causing severe economic loss in susceptible cloven-hoofed animals. There are 7 serotypes of FMD virus (FMDV), namely, O, A, C, SAT 1, SAT 2, SAT 3 and Asia 1. Infection with one serotype does not confer immunity against another." (https://www.woah.org/fileadmin/Home/eng/Health_standards/tahm/3.01.08_FMD.pdf)

Several Algerian local media sources have reported the spread of the disease to other wilayas, such as Sétif, Msila, Tebessa, Bouira and Relizane. For more information on these, refer to posts in the See Also section below. Information regarding serotype(s)/topotype(s) currently circulating in Algeria is expected. In Algeria, the FMD national vaccination campaign targets cattle only. Cattle are vaccinated twice a year with a bivalent vaccine that contains the following strains: O/TUR/2009 + O Manisa, A 22/IRQ. - Mod.SF
