The president of the Tunisian Veterinary Statutory Body, Ahmed Rejeb, declared on Wednesday [20 Dec 2023] to the radio that there are FMDV [foot-and-mouth disease virus] outbreaks in several wilayas such as (Nabeul, Monastir, Kasserine, Tozeur), noting that it is a highly contagious disease that causes heavy economic losses.

Meat from cattle infected with foot-and-mouth disease is not eaten if it is slaughtered, he said, noting that it is usually buried between 2 layers of lime. Infection by the disease can be prevented through vaccination campaigns.

He said that these campaigns did not cover several areas during the past year [2022], so infections appeared, as private veterinarians call for a re-evaluation of vaccination fees.
