South Korea on Sunday [16 Mar 2025] confirmed an additional foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) case at a local farm, raising the number of cases this year [2025] to 5, the agriculture ministry said. The latest case was found at a beef cattle farm in the county of Muan, about 290 km [180.0 mi] south of Seoul, where 3 cows were confirmed to have been infected, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The country on Friday [14 Mar 2025] reported the 1st FMD outbreak at a local farm since May 2023 and found 3 additional cases in the county of Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, the following day [15 Mar 2025].

All of the cattle at the affected farm were to be culled in a preventive step, the ministry said, adding it will take other necessary quarantine measures. The government raised the crisis level for Muan and several other adjacent regions to "serious," the highest level of its 4-tier system, and has begun a nationwide FMD vaccination program, initially planned for next month [April 2025].

South Korea on Monday [17 Mar 2025] reported an additional foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) case at local cattle farms, raising the number of cases this year [2025] to 8, the agriculture ministry said. The latest case was found at 3 beef cattle farms in the county of Yeongam, about 300 km [186.4 mi] south of Seoul, where 12 cows were confirmed to have been infected, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

The farms were located nearby a local farm where this year's [2025] 1st FMD case broke out last week for the 1st time in almost 2 years. The infected cattle at the farms will be culled, the ministry said, adding it has taken other necessary quarantine measures. Following the 1st outbreak, the government has raised the crisis level for Yeongam and several other adjacent regions to "serious," the highest level of its 4-tier system, and has begun a nationwide FMD vaccination program, initially planned for next month [April 2025].

["Close contact between infected and susceptible animals is the most common way in which FMDV is spread, based on aerosol transmission or environmental contamination. Animal movement is thus an important factor in allowing contact between infected and susceptible livestock and enabling the spread of FMD to new areas or even new countries. Livestock movement at a local level such as mixing with other livestock at water sources or common grazing areas, etc. may be important in local spread of disease but disease spread over significant distances and across borders is generally associated with trade-related movement" (https://rr-asia.woah.org/app/uploads/2020/02/seacfmd-manual-4.pdf). - Mod.TTM
