Alert in Siliana: Foot-and-mouth disease cases detected in cattle
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hamdi Daoudi, head of the local union of agriculture and marine
fishing in northern Siliana, confirmed in a statement to Mosaique FM
on Saturday, 12 Apr 2025, that 5 confirmed cases of foot-and-mouth
disease had been recorded among cattle herds in the Masouj and
Al-Khalsa regions of northern Siliana.
He added that these infections pose a direct threat to the livestock
in the region (Massouj and Al-Khalsa), which includes more than 700
head of cattle, in addition to the small ruminant herds. Al-Daoudi
also expressed his deep concern about the development of the herds'
health situation in the face of the outbreak, noting that the 1st case
was recorded on 4 Apr 2025.
Urgent intervention is necessary
--------------------------------
Hamdi Al-Daoudi called on regional authorities and veterinary services
to urgently intervene to contain the outbreak and provide the
necessary vaccines, as well as activate monitoring and isolation
mechanisms to prevent the disease from spreading to neighboring areas.
He said that time is of the essence in such cases, which threaten food
security and the livelihoods of hundreds of families in the region.
It should be noted that foot-and-mouth disease is a rapidly spreading
viral disease among hoofed animals such as cows, sheep, and goats, and
can cause significant economic losses for farmers if cases are not
contained in a timely manner.
