The Agricultural Police Service announced the death of 270 lambs from 4 breeders in Tarhuna [a village in Al Marqab (also called Al Murqub) district] due to foot-and-mouth disease, noting that these cases were recorded on Saturday [17 Feb 2024] in the Sidi Essid area in Tarhuna.

Its branch in Tarhuna "received a report from a citizen stating that there were dead sheep in the Sidi Essid area due to foot-and-mouth disease, and the number of dead sheep exceeded 100 sheep", the statement said.

The agency also received a report from another citizen that there were dead sheep due to foot-and-mouth disease in the Sidi Essid area, estimated at 170 small lambs owned by 3 breeders, after opening the report of collecting evidence and investigating the incident, after one of the agency's patrols arrived at the scene.

The Agricultural Police confirmed that the mayor of the municipality and the competent authorities have been informed and coordinated with them as the matter is extremely dangerous, calling to take all precautionary measures to limit the spread of the disease within the municipality and its transmission to other municipalities.

Warnings of spread of lumpy skin disease and foot-and-mouth disease among livestock
---------------------------------------------------------
The National Center for Animal Health has warned of the dangerous spread of lumpy skin disease and foot-and-mouth disease and their impact on livestock.

The center issued an important statement in which it urged all responsible sectors in the government to strengthen the capacity of veterinary authorities and those concerned with the agricultural sector to move quickly and take the necessary measures and provide the required capabilities to limit the spread of lumpy skin disease in the affected areas.

The center pointed out that the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, which affects livestock, especially in the season of increased demand for meat in the month of Ramadan and sacrifices in the Eid al-Adha season, will have serious economic consequences, especially in the increase in prices.

The statement added that adequate and immediate control capabilities must be provided by providing the necessary vaccines and medicines, strengthening health control over infected and suspected animals, in addition to enhancing awareness and education among farmers and animal owners on the importance of prompt reporting any suspected cases.

The Center for Animal Health noted that all concerned parties must take this warning seriously and work to intensify efforts and joint cooperation to avoid the situation turning into a disaster that affects the agricultural sector and society in general.

Meanwhile, the Agricultural Police Tarhuna branch announced on Sunday [18 Feb 2024] the death of more than 100 sheep in the Sidi Essid area due to foot-and-mouth disease.

The agency called on the competent authorities to move as quickly as possible to take all precautionary measures to limit the spread of the disease within the municipality and its transmission to other municipalities.

The agency added that a patrol of the device went out to the area based on a report from a citizen and opened the report of collecting evidence of the incident, and after investigation it was found that there was a group of breeders whose sheep had died due to this disease, numbering (170) small lambs.

[Since December 2023, FMDV [foot-and-mouth disease virus] outbreaks have been reported in North African countries (Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya); see posts below. Serotype O circulation was officially reported to the WOAH by Tunisia (https://wahis.woah.org/#/in-review/5379?fromPage=event-dashboard-url) and Libya (https://wahis.woah.org/#/in-review/5499?fromPage=event-dashboard-url). This period was also marked by a change in the epidemiological picture of foot-and-mouth disease in this region with the first detection of serotype SAT-2 topotype V in Algeria. To date, SAT2 has never been detected in Tunisia (https://www.wrlfmd.org/north-africa/tunisia). SAT2 topotype VII was detected for the first time in Libya in 2012. More information can be found at https://www.fao.org/3/an380e/an380e.pdf.

Vaccination strategy varies from country to country. Only Tunisia vaccinated against serotype SAT-2. In Libya, a vaccination campaign has not been undertaken since 2021. More information can be found at https://promedmail.org/promed-post/?id=8714699. - Mod.SF
