[In its weekly bulletin dated 19 Mar 2023, Libya's National Centre for Animal Health addressed FMD serotype O affecting 12 cattle farms situated in 6 districts. The report was covered in ProMED post 20230320.8709051. The data follow:

District (locality) / No. farms / date of start
---------------------------------------------------
Tripoli (Oudi Al Rabi) / 1 / 20 Feb 2023
Bayda (Al Jabal al Akhdar) / 1 / 20 Feb 2023
Al Marj (Farzouga) / 1 / 23 Feb 2023
Tobruk / 1 / 1 Mar 2023
Djeffara (Abou Issa) / 5 / 7 Mar 2023
Misratah / 3 / 14 Mar 2023

The disease was, reportedly, suspected also on one sheep farm in Djeffara (Awled Issa). It is not clear if this event's diagnosis has been completed.

The Center's report included the following comment: "The serotype has been identified (O), and samples were sent to the FMDV reference laboratory for topotyping: Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia e dell'Emilia Romagna (IZSLER)."

Outbreak location 3 (AlZarooq, Misratah) in the current (immediate report to WOAH) notification, involved 11 000 sheep, of which 300 were reportedly sick and 60 died. Such high morbidity/mortality rate is typical of FMD affecting juvenile sheep and goats.

Libya is divided into 3 1st-level administrative divisions: Tripolitania in the northwest, Cyrenaica in the east, and Fezzan in the southwest. There are 106 2nd-level administrative divisions, or "districts." All recent outbreaks were located within Tripolitania.
