Recent restrictions on livestock transport and markets will be relaxed this week as a nationwide campaign to vaccinate cattle against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) nears completion, said the Ministry of Agriculture on Tuesday [14 Feb 2023].
According to a statement released by the ministry, a specialized team from the World Organization for Animal Health, led by the regional director of the organization and Italian specialists, visited livestock farms in the Al Dhelil area of the eastern Zarqa Governorate to assess the extent of disease spread and identify the source of the virus.
According to the ministry, committees were set up to compensate farmers whose livestock contracted the disease.
The ministry purchased 62 700 FMD vaccines from a British manufacturer, and as of today [14 Feb 2023], the number of cows with vaccinations has surpassed 52 625 heads, including those vaccinated by farmers.
The 1st stage of the campaign involved immunizing cows in cattle farms within a 15 km [9.3 mi] radius of Dhelil, where the FMD outbreak is thought to have started. The 2nd stage will cover an additional 10 km [6.2 mi], the ministry said, and 13 570 vaccine shots were distributed to agriculture departments throughout the kingdom.
According to the ministry's reporting system, as of Monday [13 Feb 2023] evening, 334 cows and 426 calves had perished as a result of the virus.
Officials have reassured the public that the FMD outbreak does not endanger human health and that local animal products are safe for consumption.

The World Reference Laboratory for Foot-and-Mouth Disease [WRLFMD] at Pirbright carried out matching tests of 2 SAT-2 vaccine strains against a field virus ETH/2/2022, topotype XIV, which is, according to yet unpublished, reliable information, close to the strain currently circulating in Iraq and Jordan. The results were presented in the WRLFMD's FMD Quarterly Report 4, October-December 2022, as follows:
1. Eritrea 98 vaccine: r1 0.81, HN titre 1.62
2. SAT2 Zim 83 vaccine: r1 0.54, HN titre 2.17
The r1 values represent the one-way serological match between vaccine strain and field isolate, calculated from the comparative reactivity of antisera. The r1 value should be at least 0.3 or higher, suggesting that there is a close antigenic relationship between field isolate and vaccine strain. A potent vaccine containing the vaccine strain is likely to confer protection. Heterologous neutralisation (HN) titres for vaccine sera with the field isolates are an indicator of cross-protection.
The same strain is currently circulating in Iraq (see ProMED post 20230215.8708397). Regional approach, coordinated by international agencies, is warranted. - Mod.AS
