Dhi Qar records 250 cases of foot-and-mouth disease
---------------------------------------------------
The director of the veterinary hospital in Dhi Qar confirmed that the province continues to record cases of foot-and-mouth disease among livestock, but the numbers remain "below the normal rate due to the preventive measures taken."
In a statement to the Al-Jeebal platform, Dr. Ali Abdul-Hussein, the hospital director, indicated that "the total number of cases has reached 250, with 225 recovering and the remaining cases on their way to recovery, while 27 livestock have died."
He added that "these numbers do not pose a significant threat according to global standards, and the main reason for the spread of the disease is the failure of some breeders to vaccinate their livestock, especially newborn calves." He noted that the total number of livestock in the province ranges from 700 000, including cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep.
Regarding preventive measures, Abdul-Hussein emphasized that "the ban on livestock movement between Dhi Qar and other provinces is still in place, which is one of the effective solutions that has helped limit the further spread of the disease, in addition to the preventive vaccination campaigns previously conducted."

[During the past few weeks, FMDV outbreaks have been recorded in several Iraqi governorates (see posts below). FMDV is enzootic in Iraq. In 2024, FMDV outbreaks were due to the emerging SAT2/XIV lineage across several governorates. Information regarding the epidemiological situation, particularly the FMDV serotype(s)/topotype(s) currently circulating in Iraq, is expected. - Mod.SF
