Many livestock breeders in the Kurdistan Region have complained about the death of large numbers of their animals, causing them financial losses due to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, which has spread from the southern provinces of Iraq.
A livestock breeder in Erbil said that a truck full of infected animals came from southern Iraq to Kirkuk and then to Erbil, causing the infection to spread to sheep and leading to the death of several animals. He told Kurdistan 24 that within 3 days, 40 sheep out of the 100 he owned had died, and he added that the remaining animals were also infected, except for 3. He added, "No veterinarian or medication can control the disease, and although we conducted several tests on the animals, some veterinarians told us it is an epidemic."
He pointed out that the arrival of the animal shipment from southern Iraq to Erbil was also the cause of the disease spreading to their livestock.

[In 2024, FMDV outbreaks were due to the emerging SAT2/XIV lineage across several governorates. A vaccination campaign started in August 2024 using a vaccine containing O, A, Asia-1, and SAT 2 serotypes. ProMED-MENA would appreciate receiving any available information regarding the epidemiological situation, particularly the FMDV serotype(s)/topotype(s) currently circulating in Iraq. - Mod.SF
