Ministry strengthens FMD handling strategy for red zone areas
-------------------------------------------------------------
The Agriculture Ministry is intensifying a strategy to handle Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) among livestock in 9 provinces categorized as red zones. Those 9 provinces include 6 in Java, along with Lampung, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara, the ministry's Director General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, Agung Suganda, remarked on Saturday [25 Jan 2025].
His side, along with the heads of animal husbandry and animal health services in the 9 red zones, held a meeting on Friday [24 Jan 2025] with representatives of professional, academic, and livestock associations. "We were preparing an operational strategy for the FMD vaccination month from February to March 2025," Suganda explained.
He remarked that the Agriculture Ministry had budgeted 4 million doses of the FMD vaccine funded by the State Budget. Suganda explained that the regional government will also contribute 1 million doses of vaccine from its Regional Budget, while another 1 million doses will be sourced through independent vaccinations carried out by entrepreneurs.
Moreover, several livestock companies, such as a feedlot company in Lampung, will conduct independent vaccinations for livestock within a 3 km [1.9 mi] radius and provide free vaccinations for the surrounding community. "The Indonesian Milk Cooperative Association (GKSI) will also carry out such practice," Suganda remarked.
Based on existing calculations, he highlighted that Indonesia ideally needs around 6 million doses of vaccine to eradicate FMD in 9 red zones.
"The goal of this vaccination is to form herd immunity in the area," he explained. He expressed optimism about Indonesia's potential to eliminate FMD. In 1990, the country was free from the disease due to support from the Center for Veterinary Pharmacy (BBVF) Pusvetma, which produces FMD vaccines.
The current number of FMD cases in Indonesia from December 2024 to 23 Jan 2025, was recorded at 28 725, with 858 deaths. These cases are spread across 18 provinces. However, he did not detail the distribution of cases in the provinces.
Suganda said the trend of FMD cases had shown to significantly decline, even below the figure recorded in the 3rd week of December 2024.

["In a decisive move to combat the resurgence of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) among livestock, the Indonesian government has initiated the distribution of 124 225 vaccine doses in the 1st phase of its 2025 campaign. This effort is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Agriculture, which has allocated a total of 4 million doses to be disseminated across 25 provinces reporting FMD cases."
"The Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, emphasized the phased approach to vaccine distribution, tailored to the specific requests from provincial offices. The ministry's distribution schedule is ambitious: 400 000 doses in January (2025), scaling up to 1.2 million doses in February, and an additional 400 000 doses in March. The remaining 2 million doses are earmarked for the 2nd vaccination period, slated between July and September 2025."
