The foot and mouth disease [FMD] identified last December [2022] continues to afflict the cattle herd. The General Directorate of Livestock lamented 3 new cattle deaths, marking a total of 33 deaths out of the 85 infected. Dr Onzade Charafoudine indicated that palliative treatment may be considered.
The director general of livestock said he listens to breeders for preventive measures because technicians avoid going from farm to farm to avoid transmission through shoes, noting that this is a fever with various strains. Each strain has its own vaccine. He said the treatment depends on the strain identified, reassuring breeders that palliative treatment will soon be available. He asked breeders to be vigilant and contact the General Directorate of Livestock in the event of the first suspicious symptoms observed.
As a reminder, during a press conference, held on Tuesday 10 Jan 2023, the delegate of the Comoros to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), Dr Moutroifi Youssouf Ousseine, affirmed to be in contact with the specialized agency for the delivery of samples from Moroni to ANSES [Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety] in France. Asked about this subject on Sat [28 Jan 2023], Dr Onzade Charafoudine indicated that the discussions are on the right track, confirming the forthcoming sending of the samples already taken to the ANSES laboratory in France.

[The Union of the Comoros is an independent country made up of 3 populated islands in south eastern Africa: Ngazidja (1147 sq km/443 sq mi), Ndzwani (424 sq km/164 sq mi), and Mwali (290 sq km/112 sq mi).
According to the initial information, the disease entered following the arrival of animals from Tanzania and Kenya on board a boat that docked Wed 14 to Thu 15 Dec 2022 in Ngazidja (20221227.8707478).
According the available information, the recorded case fatality rate has been strikingly high, namely nearly 39%. It would be interesting to get information about the age and breed of the affected animals and to study the pathogenicity of the causative agent. During the press conference of 10 Jan 2023, it was stated that the delayed transfer of the samples to France was "linked to the end-of-year celebrations" (20230113.8707775).
The disease has spread throughout Ngazidja and Mwali, belated vaccination becoming less or ineffective. It may, however, still contribute to the protection of Ndzwani's livestock. - Mod.AS
