Authorities in 3 provinces have implemented temporary closures of weekly livestock markets and imposed restrictions on animal movement as preventive measures against potential foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks.
In the provinces of Tiaret and Relizane, officials have ordered the closure of livestock markets and prohibited the transportation of animals across these areas, except for those destined for slaughterhouses and accompanied by a veterinary certificate. These measures will remain in effect "until the epidemiological situation improves," following the detection of FMD outbreaks affecting cattle and sheep.
In Relizane, the governor has extended the prohibition temporarily and preventively for an additional month for the same reasons.

Today, Thursday [9 Jan 2025], the Mila Province authorities decided to close all weekly markets for cattle, sheep, and goats across the entire province.
According to a statement from the province's administration, this decision was made due to the detection of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks among sheep and peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in neighboring provinces.
The statement also clarified that the decision takes effect starting Thursday [9 Jan 2025]. The transportation of livestock within, out of, or across the province is strictly prohibited to prevent the spread of the disease, except for animals destined for slaughter, which must be accompanied by a slaughter certificate.

Similar to many provinces across the country, Constantine Province authorities announce livestock market closures. This decision comes following the detection of FMDV and PPR outbreaks in neighbouring provinces. Starting from the day of signing this decision, Wednesday [8 Jan 2025], it is strictly forbidden to move livestock within, out of, or across the province except for animals destined for slaughter, which must be accompanied by a slaughter certificate.

[Several Algerian provinces have registered outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Additionally, it seems that Algeria is facing a co-circulation of the foot-and-mouth disease virus and the peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus. Both are enzootic diseases in Algeria with devastating economic impacts. ProMED would appreciate receiving any available information regarding the epidemiological situation, particularly the FMDV serotype(s)/topotype(s) currently circulating in Algeria. - Mod.SF
